Sculpture at Evergreen 6: Simultaneous Presence is co-curated by Ronit Eisenbach, an artist and architect, and Jennie Fleming, an artist and cultural historian, whose dialogue and simultaneous presence along with the works by the invited visual thinkers contribute to an embedded conversation on the intertwining of moment, meanings, and place.
Ronit Eisenbach — Ronit Eisenbach is associate professor of architecture and chair of the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation's Kibel Gallery. An artist, architect, and author, her installations have been exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Arts; the Art Gallery of Windsor; the Graham Foundation; Princeton University; the Cranbrook Art Museum; and the streets of Tel Aviv. Her new book, co-authored with Dr. Sarah Bonnemaison, Installations by Architects: Explorations in Building and Design, was released in July 2009 by Princeton Architectural Press.
Jennie Fleming — Jennie Fleming is an artist, curator, and educator. She is currently a Ph.D. student in the media, art, and text program at Virginia Commonwealth University. She received a MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and a BFA from Drake University. Her previous curatorial positions include associate director at The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland, College Park and curatorial assistant in Prints, Drawings & Photographs at the Baltimore Museum of Art. She has held faculty positions at Towson University, MICA, and VCU.
Evergreen is a particular type of place—a museum, a venue for special events, and a former home. It is difficult to be “present” at Evergreen without being drawn to its singularity and multiplicity, its unity and variety. The house has a commanding presence shaped by its former occupants, their impressive library and collection of art, and their patronage of the arts. This “simultaneous presence” of past and present, of dwelling and cultural venue, of presence and absence also is informed by those who contribute to its ongoing role as a performed place, a former and current destination for the production and consumption of culture.
For Sculpture at Evergreen 6: Simultaneous Presence, invited individuals and teams of artists and architects work in all media, including wood, metal, lace, clay, vegetables, light, and found objects, in site-specific installations throughout the property. These installations embrace and challenge the historical and cultural ground of Evergreen as well as the physical grounds; works that invite participation and reflection on convergent and contrasting meanings of this place. This year’s participants draw out the histories of Evergreen and connect them to current civic, national, and global concerns beyond its bounds, and consider the simultaneous presence of both abundance and absence, sustenance and sustainability, fantasy and pleasure, wealth and its source, and the contrasting realities of Baltimore.
