Andrea Palladio from Rome to Baltimore

An international panel of five distinguished scholars will explore the lasting influence of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, one of the greatest architects of the western world, and his lasting influence on building design in America. The symposium, organized in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Palladio's birth, concludes with a 4:30pm reception at Homewood.

Painting Tiffany

Painting Tiffany: A Watercolor Workshop

Explore watercolor's renowned ability to convey the experience of light, as well as form and space, by drawing inspiration from the brilliantly-hued Tiffany glass lamps and ornamental objects on display at Evergreen. The class is open to artists of all levels and includes a tour of the museum's extensive Tiffany collections.

The House Beautiful Lecture Series
Mastering Tradition: The Residential Architecture of John Russell Pope

Architect James B. Garrison will take as his starting point several of Pope's key residential projects in Baltimore and Washington to show how these relate to his better known public works. A book signing and catered reception follows.

Ronald Ratner, an executive vice president of Forest City Enterprises—one of the nation's largest publicly traded real estate companies—will discuss the pitfalls of equating city size and growth with success, the central role that cities play in metropolitan areas, and smart stretegies for shrinking cities. Presented by Evergreen Museum & Library and the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies.

Public Opening Celebration
Sculpture at Evergreen 2008


The landscaping of Evergreen's 26-acre grounds provides a distinctive setting for 10 new works of temporary sculpture, created by contemporary artists for the museum's fifth biennial Sculpture at Evergreen. Join curator Andrea Pollan and the participating artists at this opening celebration, which features exhibition viewing, a museum open house, and light refreshments.

An Evening with James Abbott at the Johns Hopkins Club

In this illustrated talk, Evergreen curator James Abbott will highlight works of fine and decorative arts from the museum's collections—including rare paintings by Amedeo Modigliani and Ignacio Zuloaga and exceptional works by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Léon Bakst—and lead a visual tour of the eclectic interiors created by and for two generations of Baltimore's prestigious Garrett family.

The lecture is followed by dinner with the speaker.
