Specialized Group Tour | Tour & Madeira Tasting

Homewood Museum now offers a special group tour that includes a Madeira tasting reception in the Wine Cellar. Madeira, a fortified wine from Portugal, was collected and savored by Maryland gentry. Charles Carroll Jr.'s most valuable entry in his inventory at the time of his death in 1825 was his Madeira, and his Madeira garret is one of the unique surviving spaces at Homewood.

Groups learn the history of Madeira and its importance in the early United States and taste two different types of Madeira following a tour of the museum. The tour and tasting includes two bottles of Madeira per group and cheese and crackers. Additional bottles of Madeira are available for the tasting at $25 each.

Hours
The Tour & Madeira Tasting at Homewood is offered Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Arrangements also can be made for a special evening Tour & Madeira Tasting.

School Tours and Programs at Homewood House

Homewood Museum provides opportunities for students in grades 6-9 to gain an in-depth understanding of daily life in 1808 through participatory tours and activities that may combine role-playing with research and period appropriate activities.

Group Size
School tours and programs are available for groups of 15-40 students. Students are divided into groups of five or six individuals.

Hours
Tuesday through Friday during regular museum hours.

Resources
Teachers receive a pre-visit informational packet (including images) about the history of Homewood and the Carroll family.

Admission
$3.50/student. One adult chaperone per ten students is required but is not charged admission.

Reservations
Reservations must be made in advance by calling Homewood at 410-516-5589.

School Tour
Students experience what Homewood was like through a participatory tour of the 1801 restored home. With guidance from tour leaders, each student assumes the role of a family member, guest, servant or slave during the tour.

You may choose from two follow-up activities...

1. Conduct Primary Research: Each group uses cooperative learning techniques to undertake primary research using topics and Carroll family letters and documents provided by Homewood staff. Topics from which students may choose to explore slavery, medical treatments, travel, and family relationships. At the end of the research segment, students compile their findings and present a report to the entire group. The primary research booklets offer points of comparison to life today.

2. Play Early American Games: Lawn bowling, marbles, and hoops — weather permitting. Checkers, whist, and dominoes can be substituted for the primary research component for camp groups, younger students, or for a less rigorous academic experience.
